Morning Practice

One of the many troubles that I come across as a swimmer is none other than morning practice.  My whole body kinda just shivered just thinking about it. First of all, you can do absolute NOTHING the night before. If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me, "Hey lets go to this party!" and I reply with, "...I can't. I have swimming in the morning," I would be one rich gal! Just having the nature of a swimmer, something in our brains is wired to tell us YOU CANT MISS PRACTICE. OR YOULL DIE. Well..my brain at least.
So I thought I would run you through what my normal morning practice looks like.  At 6 a.m., I am forced to the leave the comfort of my cozy, sweet bed to slip on that oh so attractive one-piece suit.

I then pry my eyes open to pop in some contacts, brush my teeth, and i'm out the door. On my way to the pool, my favorite thing to do is blast the heater in my car because my body just knows what i'm about to put it through. (poor thing :( ) When I arrive at the OUTDOOR pool, I am greeted with the beauty of all swim friends staring at the pool like death is near. Or, even better, one of them running up to me to tell me the horrible set coach has planned for us.  So at this point, I'm REALLY not looking forward to this practice as I strip my sweatshirt and pajama pants off.  Keep in mind, its still pitch black dark outside where I live, and the blistering winds are not much help either. I ever so gently stick my big toe in the water in high hopes that my coaches promise of a "pool heater" has been fulfilled and as always, its not.  As every swimmer begins to dive in, I take my last breath of life, and jump into the ice cold water.  Now, I dont know if any of you guys have ever been in cold water when your body temperature is warm, but all I can say is STEAM. EVERYWHERE.  I glance around the pool expecting to see the Titanic sink somewhere this water is so cold.  I then do my best to breathe and get through practice, to face the only thing worse than getting in the pool, getting OUT of the pool. When you jump out, its kinda like your swim suit decided to crystallize on your body and the worst wind decided to hit at that moment.  Yep, morning practice is the BOMB.  But hey, just another trouble in the life of a swimmer.  Swim on my lovelies!
